A Mechanical Type C Cable For Connecting Your Computer to the Keyboard

The USB-C, or USB 3.mechanical type c cable 1 Gen 2 connector is the latest standard USB connection. It’s reversible, and is designed to replace all previous types of USB connections. The new connection can be used to transfer both power for charging, and data to transfer files or other information. It can even be used to transmit audio, video and other peripherals. It’s also capable of carrying other protocols, such as DisplayPort, Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL) and HDMI, and will be extensible to support future protocols as well.

While it’s not nearly as common as the USB micro-B, it can be found on a number of devices including slim laptops, some Android phones, video gaming controllers and other electronic gadgets. USB-C has a 24-pin double-sided connector that looks somewhat similar to the micro-B connector, but is slightly longer and can be plugged in either direction. The receptacle has four power and ground pins, two differential pairs for legacy USB 2.0 high-speed data, four shielded differential pairs for Enhanced SuperSpeed USB data (two transmit and two receive), sideband use pins, and Configuration Channel (CC) pins. The CC pins are typically unused, but can be pulled down to control the connection state and carry USB Power Delivery messages.

As with other USB protocols, a variety of cables are available for transferring data and providing power over a USB-C connection. The most basic of these cables are passive and have no built-in electronics to amplify the signals. Other active variants can provide up to 60 W of power, but are limited in backward compatibility and support for Alt modes by the USB Power Delivery protocol.

Regardless of whether they’re passive or active, all cables for transferring data and power must contain E-Marker chips that identify their capabilities to the host device. These identify the product/vendor, cable connectors, USB signalling protocol (2.0, Gen speed rating or Gen 2), passive/active construction, use of VCONN power, availability of VBUS current, RX/TX directionality, and more.

A cable that can only be used for data can be identified by the USB PD protocol, which specifies a minimum of 3 A of current and 20 V of power. In order to provide this level of power, cables must include the CC1 and CC2 pull-down resistors on the receptacle. Adapters that connect a USB-C device to a USB-A receptacle do not require this, but are usually required to include termination resistors on the CC pins of the adapter to support C to A connection and power.
